Taxonomy & Classification
Objectives:
1. For students to understand taxonomy and the classification system based on binomial nomenclature.
2. For students to understand who Carolus Linnaeus was and what his classification system was/is based upon.
3. For students to understand how the modern classification system is based on phylogeny (evolutionary history) of the organism being classified.
4. For students to understand the seven levels of the hierarchical system of classification:
KINGDOM à PHYLUM à CLASS à ORDER à FAMILY à GENUS à SPECIES
5. For students to understand the importance of derived characters in classifying organisms by using a cladogram.
6. For students to be able to generate a cladogram to classify a given set of organisms.
7. For students to understand the three-domain/six kingdom system of classification.
8. For students to be able to use & create a dichotomous key to classify organisms.
For your spring break assignment. Complete the table below, IN YOUR OWN WORDS, and memorize ALL of the characteristics for each Kingdom. You will have a test over the table and terminology the first day back from spring break!!!
