Informal Laboratory Write-Up

 

Lab write-up should be typed, double-spaced, default font & font size & margins.

The write-up should include the following sections:

 

               1.  Title (2 points)

               2.  Problem (2 points)

               3.  Hypothesis (4 points)

               4.  Prediction (4 points)

               5.  Review/Background Information (that explains Hypothesis & Prediction) (10 points)

               6.  Procedure (5 points)

               7.  Data/Results (5 points)

               8.  Conclusion (10 points)

               9.  Bibliography (3 points)

                              (50 points total with 5 points from participation)

 

1.  The title should be a brief BUT concise description of the experiment.  For the �Accuracy in the Lab� experiment, an appropriate title would be (do NOT copy or use this one for your title!!!):

 

�Determining the Accuracy & Precision of Using Various Measuring Devices�

 

2.  The problem should include a few sentences about what the problem that is being tested in the experiment.

 

3.  Hypothesis is in the form of an �If�.then�� statement.

 

4.  Prediction states what you expect to happen in your experiment.

 

5.  The review/background information should give the reader enough information in order to understand the problem stated above.

 

6.  Procedure for the informal report should be brief and general.

               (Note:  For formal laboratory reports, the procedure will be thorough)

 

7.  The data/results should include any tables or graphs relevant to the question being asked.  Points will be taken off for not including the appropriate units for all the data in any graphs, tables etc�

 

 

8.  The conclusion should cite the relevant results in explaining how they SUPPORT or do not SUPPORT the hypothesis & prediction.

(DO NOT just re-state the results but EXPLAIN their relevance to the hypothesis & prediction).

 

9.  Include any sources that were used in the bibliography (class notes, handouts, textbooks, etc�)

               For textbooks, include title, author, publisher, edition, year published, and page numbers that were referenced.
