About Team Handball A game resembling handball is depicted on Greek carvings dating back to 600 B.C., and earlier still, Homer writes about a similar sport called Uranias in the Odyssey. The modern game started in Denmark, and the first official rules were in place by 1848. The first international game squared off in 1925, and by 1928 the International Amateur Handball Federation had 23 nation members. Handball is an Olympic sport since the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. For the last decades Handball is the second most popular sport in the world, after football (soccer). Professional Handball leagues features high paid celebrities that are among the world's most gifted athletes. The easiest way to describe Handball is as water polo on solid ground, with elements of basketball, soccer and lacrosse. Handball has all the aggressiveness and fast-paced, up-and-down flow and wild action around the goal, not to mention rugged, fearless play of classic fire wagon hockey. The Handball court measures 20 X 40 meters (66 X 132 feet), and the object of the game is to throw the ball past the goalkeeper into the 3 X 2 meters (10 X 6.7 feet) net. Seven players (goalie + six court players) on each team are allowed on the court at the same time. Unlimited substitutions are allowed. Crisp, creative ball movement is paramount to setting up the many scoring opportunities in Handball. Since no players are allowed inside the 6 meters arc, the offensive team works the ball quickly around the perimeter to find a player with an open shot.
