History of St. Mark's School of Texas Varsity Swimming - 1963-2002 HISTORY The St. Mark's School of Texas varsity swimming team began in 1963 when former headmaster Ted Whatley recruited 7 boys to kick off the program. Although there is no record of the team's success that first year, the team grew to 11 in size and finished with a 3 win, 6 loss dual meet record at end of the second season. With the completion of Ralph B. Rogers Natatorium in 1968, the 1968-69 Lion team finished with what may have been its first winning season with a 8 win, 7 loss record. Incomplete records for the 1965-66, 66-67 and 67-68 seasons leave some questions unanswered. Since that time, there has only been one losing season. In the last 30 years, 1968-69 through 1997-98, the dual meet record stands at 174 wins, 58 losses and 1 tie. This total does not include 1970-71 and 1975-76 where records are incomplete. At the end of the 1994-95 undefeated season and 19 years at the helm, Coach Merten won his 100th dual meet. St. Mark's has had the opportunity to play an important role in the development of several outstanding swimmers who went on to compete at the NCAA Division I level in college. The two most successful swimmers were Greg Kraus '76 and Robert Musslewhite '88. Greg went on to SMU where he placed third at the NCAA's in the 200 free and was second as a member of one of the relay teams. During his career at SMU, Greg earned 13 NCAA All America rankings, and Greg's name still shows up on 6 of the 8 individual events on the "St. Mark's All Time Top Ten" list. Robert Musslewhite went to Princeton where he was a member of the NCAA championship 200 medley relay team his freshman year. Robert's name shows up on 7 of the 8 individual events on the top ten list. The most prolific name on the top ten list is Todd Oakes '86. Todd's name is one of the top two names for all eight individual events! Without a doubt, Todd was the most successful swimmer at St. Mark's over its 30 year swimming history. Unfortunately, Todd's swimming career came to an end at Stanford when he decided to hang up his suit after his freshman year. Over the last twenty two years where accurate records exist, there have been nine Lion swimmers who have earned 20 Prep School All America rankings and 23 All America Honorable Mention rankings. Leading the ranks are Todd Oakes with 14 rankings, Sean Gallagher '87 with 9 rankings, Robert Musslewhite with 7; plus Wade Stokes '84, Brad Lengyel '86, and Richard Wesson '80, all with three rankings each. Since private schools are not allowed to participate in the District, Regional and State championships offered by the public school University Interscholastic League (UIL), St. Mark's has traveled to the east coast to participate in the Eastern Interscholastic Prep School Swimming Championships for several years. The Lions' best finish was in 1987 where they placed fifth. In the last twenty two years, St. Mark's has placed in the top 10 four times and the top 15 eight times. Last year, Chris Peckover placed 11th in the 200 IM and 9th in the 100 backstroke. With the resurrection of the Southwest Preparatory Conference Swimming Championships in 1995, the Lions have won six straight titles. CURRENT PROGRAM The Lions swimming team has been able to maintain a "no cut" policy allowing boys of all ability levels to participate in the program. Current team size averages about twelve. Practice is limited to ten hours per week, which is divided between the weight room and the pool. The balance is about 25/75 in the first part of the season and then the weights are eliminated for the last third of the year. Because of the limited pool time, the program emphasis is on quality swimming and strength development. USS club swimmers that have achieved "TAGS" times may be allowed to split their practice time between St. Mark's and their club if they make a request. The team typically participates in 4 to 6 dual meets and 3 to 5 invitational meets per season, and although the Lions have never achieved the status of the best in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, they typically are one of the top three to eight teams. With the exception of Jesuit and Greenhill, most of the Lions competition is against public 4A and 5A schools. For the last two years, Mihai Oprea, a former National and Olympic water polo player, has coached the Lions. Coach Oprea is origionally from Bucharest, Romania. His career in water polo extends for over 25 years. He won the Romanian National Championships for six straight years, was a member of the Junior National Team, the National Team, and the Romanian Olympic Team. In addition, Mihai played in the Elite Professional League of Romania and in the Dutch Water Polo League. Currently he is the Head Water Polo Coach and player for the Dallas Water Polo Club. Coach Oprea is also leading our water polo and team handball programs here at St. Mark's. Apart from his water polo expertise, Coach Oprea is a successful swimming coach. His coaching career in swimming extends for over 10 years, with different clubs in Europe and mainly in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. The American Swimming Coaches Association certifies Coach Oprea as a Level IV Swimming Coach. Since the 1996 season, our team has had the privilege to have Bill McCumber as the assistant coach. Coach McCumber had a long career as a competitive swimmer beginning at the age group level. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was an outstanding breaststroker on the varsity team. Coach McCumber has a key role in the development of our swimmers, especially the breaststrokers, and also in the daily operations of our team. His expertise and knowledge of the sport helped the Lions to win 5 SPC titles since his arrival. Another member of the coaching staff is John Stutsman, who has been an assistant swimming coach for over 28 years. Coach Stutsman was the Head Coach of the water polo program for 16 year, leading the Lions to two State Championship. John's experience and skillful coaching abilities are a vital part of our program. He is our expert in team statistics and operational procedures. Mark Sullivan completes the coaching staff. Coach Sullivan has been with the St. Mark's swimming program for 18 years. He was a high school diver in Colorado, and he coached AAU/Club diving for two years before coming to St. Mark's. Mark also coached the middle school water polo and swimming programs. Coach Sullivan is a valuable advisor and consultant for our program, and he has a key role in the successful completion of our home swim meets. Return to top
