St. Mark’s launches $40 million Campaign in February 1999

What a Difference a Day Can Make" was the theme on February 3, 1999, when St. Mark’s School of Texas launched The Campaign for St. Mark’s, the most ambitious fundraising effort in the school’s history. The Campaign Kickoff was highlighted by a campus-wide celebration for over 1,000 students, faculty, parents, alumni and friends, and a Gala Dinner later that evening for Campaign donors, volunteers and Trustees hosted by Campaign Co-Chairs and current parents Joyce and Larry Lacerte. Enthusiasm filled the air throughout the day as members of the St. Mark’s family gathered to celebrate this historic occasion.

Over 300 alumni, parents and friends attended the Kickoff Gala Dinner where Campaign Executive Committee Co-Chair, Robert Sinclair ’74, announced that more than $30 million had already been committed toward the $40 million Campaign goal. Mr. Sinclair joined three other Campaign leaders at the podium including General Campaign Chair H. Ross Perot, Jr. ’77, Board of Trustees President, Allen E. Cullum ’64, and Headmaster Arnold Holtberg.

Almost three years in the planning, The Campaign for St. Mark’s is truly a comprehensive and broad-based effort. The $40 million goal targets needs in just about every area of the school – from increased resources for faculty support and student financial aid to several key campus improvements. "During the course of this Campaign, we plan to add more than $26 million to our endowment which today stands at just over $69 million," said Mr. Sinclair. "And, while this is certainly not a facilities Campaign, we do plan to complete several important campus projects including a new Athletic Center, a new Fitness Center, a new Administration/Classroom Building, and the restoration of Wirt Davis Hall."

Mr. Sinclair went on to say, "More than anything else, however, this Campaign is about the faculty and the students. It’s about making sure that St. Mark’s is a stronger, more dynamic institution as we move into the 21st century. All of us sitting here tonight have benefited in some measure by the profound leadership, vision and generosity of the school’s early founders including Eugene McDermott, Cecil Green, and Ralph Rogers, among others. These Dallas leaders understood how important a school like St. Mark’s would be to Dallas and thus went about putting in place the strong foundation that we all stand on today. Now it’s our turn to make a difference."

Campaign Policies

All new gifts and pledges made during the five-year period commencing on July 1, 1996 will be credited to the Campaign. Pledges to the Campaign may be funded over a period of years determined by the donor, preferably within five years from the original date of the pledge. If a donor wishes to extend a pledge beyond the five-year period or make irregular payments, they should contact the Campaign Office at (214) 346-8800.

The Campaign for St. Mark’s will include outright gifts for designated programs or facilities, realized bequests, life income trusts and other deferred gifts, and all Annual Giving contributions.

In-kind contributions such as real estate will be credited to the Campaign based upon the appraised value of the gift at the time it is made, as long as there are no restrictions regarding the liquidation of the gift. Donors who are 70 years of age or older may receive Campaign credit for confirmed outright bequest provisions. Full credit will be given unless there is an intervening beneficiary, in which case Campaign credit will be discounted. Full Campaign credit will also be given for all charitable remainder gifts such as life income trusts and annuities. If the trust has an income beneficiary under 50 years of age, credit will be given at a discounted rate.

During the course of the Campaign, alumni, parents and friends will be asked to continue supporting the Annual Giving program at an increasing rate, and to consider additional gifts for endowment or other purposes of the Campaign.

Restricted and Unrestricted Gifts

Unrestricted gifts in support of the endowment place no limitations on the use of the income from the funds. Such income will be used to meet the schools most pressing needs, as determined by the Administration and Board of Trustees on an annual basis. Unrestricted gifts provide the greatest flexibility to the school. Gifts of $10,000 or more enable a donor to establish an unrestricted named endowment fund. Unrestricted named funds can be named in honor of the donor, however the income from these funds cannot be designated by the donor. The income from these funds will be used by the school to address strategic needs that may change from year to year, as determined by the Administration and Board of Trustees.

Restricted gifts in support of the endowment designate the use of the income for a specific purpose such as student financial aid, faculty support, or a particular academic or extracurricular program. Gifts of $25,000 or more enable a donor to establish a restricted named endowment fund. Restricted named funds can be named in honor of the donor and the income from these funds can be designated by the donor to support a specific purpose.

Gifts For Facilities

Gifts for facilities may be designated for a new building or a specific space within a building. There are many naming opportunities in the new facilities as well as possible options for naming spaces within existing campus facilities. Minimum gifts amounts for naming may vary from building to building. A list of specific naming opportunities is available by contacting the Campaign Office.

Gifts For Current Use

Gifts for current use may be restricted for specific purpose or may be completely unrestricted. No minimum gift amount is required. Annual Giving combines the strength and tradition of our two most important ongoing fundraising efforts the Annual Fund and the Alumni Endowment Fund. Annual Fund efforts will continue to seek unrestricted current use gifts to support faculty salaries and academic programs. The Alumni Endowment Fund will continue to seek gifts to support class based endowment funds. When cumulative gifts exceed $100,000 for an individual alumni class, that class can name and restrict the fund such as the Class of 73 Scholarship Fund.
